Bergwijn stared his career in the Ajax youth set-up and he spent two years there before falling out with one of the trainers and deciding to leave.Eredivisie competitors PSV knew of his talent and immediately took him on in their ranks.Bergwijn made his professional debut for PSV’s reserve outfit, Jong PSV, who play in the second tier, in August 2014.After impressing there he was promoted to the first team within the year and has since made 86 league appearances for PSV, scoring 21 times in that period.

Bergwijn’s greatest asset is his ability on the ball.Just like his team-mate and fellow winger Hirving Lozano, he has a remarkable ability to keep hold of the ball when running at pace towards defenders.But when not in possession Bergwijn prefers to stay out wide and draw the play towards him – much the way Guardiola utlises Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane in his set-up.His first move with the ball is to cut in on his favoured right foot.

Before Bergwijn made his debut for Netherlands, PSV manager and Dutch legend Mark Van Bommel heaped praise on the youngster.“I think Steven Bergwijn is orange-worthy,” he said.“If it’s up to me, he’s with the Dutch national team. But I don’t make that selection, Ronald Koeman does.“Koeman called me yesterday to explain his decision, but he makes the decision. You can only do that to respect.”
